As long as there has been the celebration of Christmas, there have been discussions about when is the right time to start decorating.

Really though, there is no “right time,” but it has been proven that the earlier you decorate, the happier you are.

Some people think that December 1st is the correct time to start decorating for Christmas, but is there such a thing?

A study done by the Journal of Environmental Psychology states that, while no one day is better than any others, the earlier you decide to decorate the happier you are. Neighbors see people who decorate early as being more friendly and jovial then those who decorate late, or not at all.

The Christmas season means many different things for many different people, and in most cases, the feelings are positive.

Christmas often means seeing family and friends that you don’t usually get a chance to see on a regular basis, and during these visits, everyone tries to put their best foot forward. Celebrations are filled with good food, good company, and fun presents, who could be in a bad mood during these festivities.

Seeing the glowing lights and multi-colored baubles bring about feelings of joy and nostalgia in many people.

During a lot of children’s early education, the students are encouraged to create handmade ornaments and cards, many of which are kept and displayed every year. Special pieces that mean a lot to families are often passed down and kept as keepsakes, bringing about memories of family members that may not still be around.

The way we decorate has actually changed very little throughout the years, even dating back to the 1800’s.

While nowadays Christmas trees are decorated with electric lights and glass baubles, things weren’t so different 200 years ago. In those days, trees would be decorated with dried fruits, wrapped candies, as well as garlands made from popcorn and cranberries, and everything would be lit up with lots of candles.

Now, presents are usually kept in a pile under the tree, whereas then, the presents were the decorations.

The fruit and candies that so beautifully decorated the trees of the past would be taken down and handed out amongst the children at the end of the night. For some of the children in less affluent households, this was often the only candy they would receive all year and so it was always a special occasion.

Handmade decorations were as popular then as they are now.

Many trees would be adorned with cut paper snowflake and handprints pressed into clay. And the idea of the “Baby’s First Christmas” decoration has been around as long as the idea of decorating itself.

So, while it may strike people as too early to see decorated houses in November, the people that put up those decorations are just trying to spread their Christmas cheer.
